Activities for Counseling Underachievers

by Jeanne C. Bleuer, Susanna Palomares & Garry Walz

Conventional wisdom has it that the way to achieve more is to study harder—put in longer hours and avoid the distraction of other people.  Research suggests something different—study smarter, not necessarily harder, and use others as a support group.  This book provides all the tools you’ll need to help students improve both their perceptions of themselves as achievers and their ability to apply effective learning strategies.  Because everything is reproducible, just one book allows you to work with any number of students.

Students check their interpretative and prescriptive skills against 26 critical achievement factors and also by discussing and problem solving using relevant Simulated Case Histories.  They further enhance their abilities and motivation to achieve by participating in Individual and Group Activities.

Studying, Test Taking, and Getting Good Grades

by Susanna Palomares and Diane Schilling

One of the most important things students can learn in school is how to learn.† Studying, Test Taking, and Getting Good Grades falls solidly within the “how to learn” category. Taken from a broad variety of disciplines, it goes beyond basic study skills to address motivation, personal responsibility, diet, exercise, the brain, and numerous other topics. This entirely reproducible student activity book is designed to (1) build a base of understanding and skill development in the broad spectrum of learning, studying, and test-taking; (2) provide opportunities for students to apply this knowledge to their own lives; and (3) provide opportunities to practice and discuss new information and skills so students are better prepared to apply these techniques and skills in all subject areas. This materialís flexibility is a great assetóit is useful for counselors and teachers to use in individual, group, or classroom formats and for parents and students to use on their own.

Reaching Young Children

by Amie Chalberg

Counselors, Teachers, Occupational Therapists, and activity leaders will have just as much fun teaching these lessons as their students do experiencing them! These activities appeal to a child’s sense of adventure and need to move by utilizing five active learning strategies to present the concepts: Movement, Visualization, Application of the Senses, and Novel/Unique Connections. Appropriate for children Pre-K through 3rd grade, lessons can presented in either a forty-five minute to sixty minute block, or two sessions of thirty minutes or less. Each lesson is comprised of two parts. First, an introduction, which presents the lesson concept with an attention getting analogy followed by engaging discussion questions for the students, enabling the teacher to self evaluate the presentation of the lesson objectives; then, a practice, which provides active processing of the learned concepts through a game. Each lesson has a teacher follow- up section which includes classroom connections to childrenís literature or other academic subjects, as well as classroom management techniques. Chapters include :Self- Discovery, Self-Control, Problem Solving, Emotional Management, Communication Skills, and Learning and Career.
