Educating the Whole Child

by Susanna Palomares • Dianne Schilling

Children grow along multiple interconnected developmental pathways. When one of these pathways is neglected, other pathways suffer. Effective teachers know this and strive to move beyond basic literacy to teach the qualities that children need most — the ability to reason, investigate, solve problems, imagine and create. The activities in this book address the multidimensional needs of the whole child by providing engaging experiences that invite early-grade children to exercise their intuition, emotions, talents and problem-solving abilities. Strategies accommodate individual learning styles and are relevant to students’ lives, interests and experiences. Over 90 activities address these important topics: Learning About Me• Living with My Family and Community • Communicating with Others • Cooperating with Others • Solving Problems and Making Decisions • My Health and Safety • Caring for the Environment.

Reaching Young Children

by Amie Chalberg

Counselors, Teachers, Occupational Therapists, and activity leaders will have just as much fun teaching these lessons as their students do experiencing them! These activities appeal to a child’s sense of adventure and need to move by utilizing five active learning strategies to present the concepts: Movement, Visualization, Application of the Senses, and Novel/Unique Connections. Appropriate for children Pre-K through 3rd grade, lessons can presented in either a forty-five minute to sixty minute block, or two sessions of thirty minutes or less. Each lesson is comprised of two parts. First, an introduction, which presents the lesson concept with an attention getting analogy followed by engaging discussion questions for the students, enabling the teacher to self evaluate the presentation of the lesson objectives; then, a practice, which provides active processing of the learned concepts through a game. Each lesson has a teacher follow- up section which includes classroom connections to childrenís literature or other academic subjects, as well as classroom management techniques. Chapters include :Self- Discovery, Self-Control, Problem Solving, Emotional Management, Communication Skills, and Learning and Career.
